Gingival hyperplasia

We reliably stop and treat your gum growth!

A confident smile not only includes healthy teeth, but also healthy gums without unwanted growths. Normally, our gums, the gingiva, are light pink and lie tightly against our teeth. However, if there is an excessive proliferation of cells, known as “hyperplasia”, the area where the teeth enter the jawbone is surrounded by swelling and thickening.
Those affected often suffer not only from the severe aesthetic impairments associated with their “wild” gums. Sometimes even dental care and food intake are hindered by gum growths. Men struggle with the problem more often than women and pregnant women are also frequently affected.

With UNIQAESTHETICS® you can put an end to gum growths. We remove pronounced and persistent gum growths as part of a gingivectomy. This is a microsurgical procedure that is performed exclusively by highly qualified specialists under local anesthesia. In our modern private clinic, you can enjoy the atmosphere of an upscale hotel with first-class service and comfort, even during a short stay. You can look forward to our professional team, who will make you feel well looked after.

What are the typical symptoms of gum overgrowth?

How do gum growths become noticeable? The swelling often begins at the gum tips between the teeth and continues on the teeth. If left untreated, the growth can progress until the natural tooth crowns are completely covered by proliferating and pink to dark red discolored gingiva.

Is it painful? Usually only when inflammation with bleeding gums occurs in the mouth as a result of a bacterial infection. This can spread to other areas and even cause headaches and earaches.

If the growths are more pronounced, those affected often complain of problems with speaking, chewing and swallowing. In addition, untreated gingival hyperplasia can lead to tooth decay and periodontitis as well as the formation of psyeudotic periodontal pockets. Pregnant women are often also affected by bad breath, edema and pain.

In the worst case scenario, the teeth can become loose or displaced.

Possible symptoms and complications

  • Discoloration of the gums (pink to dark red)
  • Bleeding gums
  • Problems with eating, speaking and drinking
  • Bad breath
  • Increased risk of caries and periodontitis
  • Pain in nearby areas of the body (ears, head)

Why do gum growths occur?

There are many possible causes for the excessive proliferation of gum cells or their increase in volume. They can be triggered by both a genetic predisposition and hormonal changes, particularly during pregnancy.

Dental plaque and inflammation (periodontal disease) due to a lack of oral hygiene and poorly fitting dentures are also possible factors.

Many sufferers are not aware that long-term use of medication, especially antiepileptic, antihypertensive and immunosuppressive drugs, can cause unwanted growths.

Possible causes

  • Lack of dental care
  • ill-fitting dentures (implants)
  • Mouth breathing
  • Continuous medication
  • hereditary predisposition
  • Systemic diseases
  • Hormonal changes (pregnancy or puberty)

What exactly are gum growths?

Gum growths are periodontal diseases in which tissue becomes enlarged. We distinguish between two forms: Gingival hyperplasia is an abnormal cell proliferation of the gingiva. Gingival hypertrophy, on the other hand, is when there is an increase in the volume of the gingival cells. Differentiation is only possible pathohistologically.

How can gingival hyperplasia be treated?

Gum growths can be easily diagnosed and treated by specialists, e.g. with a microscopic tissue examination. There are conservative and surgical options for this. Sometimes it is sufficient to change or discontinue a long-term medication in consultation with the treating doctor.

If the cause cannot be eliminated, a small, uncomplicated routine procedure known as a gingivectomy can help. This is performed using a scalpel, laser, electronic instruments or electrosurgical equipment. The excess gum tissue is removed under local anesthesia. The subsequent gingivoplasty creates a flat transition of the gingival contour on the tooth and thus models the anatomically natural shape of the gums. The entire microsurgical procedure usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes.

The advantages for you

The treatment procedure for the application of veneers with UNIQSMILE®

1. initial consultation:
First, we check the current condition of your gums and teeth. We then discuss individual triggers for gum growths with you and show you the various microsurgical intervention options.

2. thorough examination:
Before any gum treatment, your teeth and gums are carefully examined. The prerequisite for an operation is that your gums are not inflamed.

3. surgical procedure:
The removal of the gums – the “gingivectomy” – and the creation of a flat transition of the gum contour on the tooth – the so-called “gingivoplasty” – are performed under local anesthesia. The mucogingival procedure takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on how much gum tissue needs to be removed. Following the procedure, we apply a gum dressing, which both supports healing and makes the healing process more comfortable.

4. check-up and follow-up:
A few days after the treatment, we will check the results again. During this follow-up examination, we will also give you tips on the long-term care of your gums and how to maintain your dental health.
