Life leaves its mark on our face and we do not always perceive the signs of time as aesthetic. External influences such as UV rays and nicotine, as well as our general lifestyle, play a major role in determining when our face starts to show its age. Over the years, the skin becomes saggy, loses its elasticity, forms wrinkles and the fatty tissue decreases. Many people suddenly feel uncomfortable when they look in the mirror and want to replace their tired or even sad facial expression with a little youthful freshness. An effective solution here is a facelift. In this article, we would like to introduce you to a particularly long-lasting and low-risk option: the SMAS facelift technique.
What does SMAS mean?
In plastic surgery in particular, new methods are constantly being developed and techniques refined. This is how the ultra-modern SMAS facelift method was developed, which makes it possible to harmoniously tighten the face without giving it a mask-like appearance. At UNIQAESTHETICS®, we like to use this method for facelifts. The abbreviation SMAS stands for “superficial muscular aponeurosis system”, which means “superficial musculoaponeurotic system”. The SMAS facelift differs from other methods as this special surgical procedure not only tightens the skin, but also repositions other layers of tissue such as muscles, fatty tissue and connective tissue under the skin back to their original location. The skin is very finely sutured during this procedure so that you do not have to worry about any noticeable scars.
Turn back the clock a decade with the SMAS facelift
If you are still hesitant about a facelift because you are afraid of a mask-like face, we can reassure you. The SMAS method is particularly suitable for achieving a particularly natural result. It prevents a mask-like appearance after a facelift, as the facial muscles responsible for our facial expressions are included in addition to the skin. Our aim is to make your face look as fresh and radiant as it did ten years ago – without giving the impression that you have had anything done to it. Goodbye gravity – hello clear facial contours!
A facelift is generally a suitable treatment method if the ageing process is already well advanced. Mild signs of ageing can often be corrected with minimally invasive treatments such as injections or a thread lift. The elasticity of the skin changes with age and makes us look older. As a rule of thumb, facelifts are not usually performed before the age of 50, but each person is very individual, which is why a professional and personal consultation is essential.
Signs that a facelift with the SMAS method is right for you:
- The troublesome areas on your face particularly affect the chin line and neck
- In general, you have the impression that your cheeks have slipped downwards
- A double chin has formed
- Your skin shows wrinkles and no longer feels “plump”
In addition to the SMAS method, there are many other possible techniques for a facelift. Find out more about the different methods of a facelift at UNIQAESTHETICS® here.
How much time should you allow for healing after an SMAS facelift?
The facial bandage that patients are given after the operation can usually be removed after a few days. The stitches are removed after one to two weeks, depending on the healing process, if no self-dissolving stitches were used. Postoperatively, you should expect swelling and bruising, which can last up to 14 days. After two weeks, patients should be able to socialize again and the swelling should have subsided. It is best to avoid sporting activities for the first six weeks after the operation in order to support the healing process.
How long does a SMAS lift last?
The results of an SMAS lift are not only particularly natural, but also last longer compared to other lifting methods. With the method we perform, you can look forward to a rejuvenating effect of around ten years. The longevity of the result also depends on your personal lifestyle and habits. You can therefore also help yourself to maintain the result for as long as possible, while at the same time doing something good for your general well-being.
