The face has a major influence on a person’s overall appearance. Whenever we meet someone, our gaze usually wanders from the shoulders to the eyes – for this reason in particular, the shape of the chin can have a significant impact on attractiveness. A double chin makes the face look fuller, shortens the neck and visually adds a few kilos. This is why a double chin is perceived as very unpleasant, especially by the wearer. The bulge between the chin and neck is usually associated with being overweight or with advancing age. However, slim and young people can also suffer from blurred facial features due to a double chin. It is difficult to hide or conceal, but in addition to a healthy diet and special training, there are also treatment methods that counteract the fat deposits on the neck and make them disappear.
How does a double chin develop?
Called submental fat in medical terminology, a double chin is caused by small fat deposits that build up on the neck – often due to poor diet and too little exercise. However, genetic predisposition can also inevitably cause a double chin. So even slim or athletic people can become carriers of the small neck fold. In such cases, it is not so much a case of fat accumulation but rather excess skin tissue. This can occur particularly in people as they get older: Over the years, the skin’s elasticity decreases as the body produces less collagen, which ensures healthy connective tissue and a firm complexion. If more fat is deposited under the chin with age, the sagging skin quickly gives way and the typical double chin develops. Ultimately, however, it is excess weight that is the main cause of the double chin in 90% of all cases. A fold of fat then gradually forms on the chin. As the skin stretches and more skin tissue forms as a result, the double chin becomes more and more noticeable. It is usually accompanied by a strong neck and a round face. Incidentally, many overweight people report that the fat fold between the neck and chin persists even after dieting. Even after losing weight, the skin under the chin may not completely recede after weight loss.
How can the double chin be removed?
Thanks to modern aesthetic surgery and new minimally invasive treatment methods, the double chin can be effectively removed.
- With CoolSculpting®, also known as cryolipolysis, excess fatty tissue is destroyed by targeted hypothermia. Unlike conventional liposuction, this new type of cryolipolysis is a non-invasive treatment that does not require a scalpel, pump or scars. Using sensors, the device constantly cools the skin down to plus four degrees Celsius, which means the death of the cells, but at the same time does not cause cold burns. The area to be treated also determines the duration of the treatment: the cooling modules run on the body for between 35 minutes and an hour. Thanks to different applicator sizes, every type of fat pad can be optimally treated – even the annoying double chin.
- Another treatment method that will make double chins a thing of the past is the fat-away injection, also known as lipolysis. The injection is an extremely quick and effective method of removing the double chin in the long term. The active ingredients phosphatidylcholine (obtained from soybeans) and deoxycholic acid injected into the problem area stimulate the human body to break down the excess fat via the liver and lymphatic system. Once the volume of the fatty tissue has been reduced by the active ingredients, the skin can regress naturally. After two to three applications, the contours of the chin look much more defined and the overall appearance appears slimmer.
Both CoolSculpting® and fat-away injections can remove the double chin quickly and with minimal surgical effort. In a non-binding consultation, we can choose the right method for you and adapt the treatment to your problem area and your needs.
