Papilla reconstruction

We treat your "black triangles" in case of gum recession!

If the gingival papillae, the small raised structures between the teeth, are lost, the so-called “black triangles” often form in the anterior region.

These dark gaps between the teeth do not look attractive. In addition, damaged or lost papillae cause an uneven gum line and sometimes also lead to phonetic changes when speaking.
For an aesthetic appearance and a radiant smile, not only the teeth but also harmonious and healthy-looking gums are crucial. This is why more and more people are undergoing treatment for receding gums and opting for papilla reconstruction.

At UNIQAESTHETICS® we offer to correct receding gums and restore the natural appearance of the gums with the help of papilla reconstruction. Gum recession cannot be reversed. However, there are treatment options, such as tissue transplantation or hyaluronic acid injections, which can mitigate the consequences.

In our modern private clinic, you will receive professional treatment and first-class care. We will work with you to find an aesthetic solution and suitable treatment method. So that you can once again appear confident with your most beautiful smile.

What exactly is the gingival papilla?

The gingival papilla is the area of the gums that tapers to a point and extends between the teeth, where it is also visible. In contrast to the rest of the gums, the papillae are therefore always visible when laughing and “showing teeth”. If the gingival papillae retract into the spaces between the teeth, a visible passageway is created between the outside and inside of the teeth.

Why can gingival papillae be damaged or lost?

There are a wide variety of gum misalignments. We treat patients with excess gums in the context of gingival hyperplasia or provide patients with too little gum tissue with a recession cover. The treatment of gum smile or the correction of uneven gums are also specialties of the specialist departments dental aesthetics and oral and maxillofacial surgery of our UNIQAESTHETICS® clinic.

The gingival papillae can also develop abnormally. They can be lost or damaged, resulting in visibly smaller gums and black triangles, especially between the front teeth. The esthetic balance of gums and teeth is thus disturbed and the overall visual impression is impaired. It is not only the “black triangles” that many people perceive as a blemish; the teeth often appear too short or disproportionate as a result.

There are many reasons for the loss of papillae. Unfortunately, once gums have been lost, they do not grow back. In most cases, various treatments and procedures are therefore used to fill the gaps between the teeth.

Possible causes for the loss of gingival papillae

– Periodontitis
– gum disease, infections
– genetic predisposition
– tooth loss
– incorrect tooth positioning, unfavorable tooth shape
– traumatic injuries
– surgical interventions
– side effects of medication or medical treatments

Possible effects of the loss of gingival papillae

– Problems with pronunciation, including whistling when speaking
– Increased sensitivity of the tooth necks to pain
– Reduced protection against bacteria, root caries
– Reduced chewing function
– Uneven gum line, visual distortion of tooth sizes

What treatment methods are available for gum reconstruction?

Depending on the degree of severity, various surgical techniques and hyaluronic acid injections can be used to restore lost or damaged papillae in the oral cavity. Plastic coverage of gum recessions is recommended not only for aesthetic reasons, but above all if pain occurs frequently.

In general, the smaller the papilla loss, i.e. the smaller the distance between the contact point and the bone, the sooner reconstruction is possible. Therefore, do not wait too long and speak to a dentist in good time if you have gum problems.

Sliding flap technology

In this technique, the affected area is covered by moving or rotating the patient’s own gums from a neighboring region. The flap is sutured in place and heals.

Connective tissue graft

If it is not possible to create sufficiently thick gums using the sliding flap technique, tissue can be harvested from the fixed palate. The connective tissue graft harvested there is placed on the exposed root surfaces as a tissue base. In some surgical procedures, flaps are also combined with grafts.

Papilla injections with hyaluronic acid

Hyaluron has long proven itself in dermatology. Due to its volume-enlarging and water-retaining properties, it has now also found its place in dentistry. Gum injections with hyaluron can plump up the gums and improve the aesthetic appearance. This is because hyaluron stimulates the formation of new collagen, which is a key component of our gums.

Hyaluronic acid injections are a minimally invasive procedure whose positive effects are immediately visible. The duration of the results varies from person to person. They usually last for several months to a year. As the hyaluronic acid is gradually broken down in the body, a refresher treatment is required after a certain period of time.

Advantages of treatment with hyaluronic acid
– non-surgical treatment
– natural substance
– immediately visible results
– well tolerated
– no prolonged recovery time

Veneers

If the gaps are too large, i.e. the loss of papilla height is too great, veneers can be veneers can be a good solution against the black triangles. The ceramic shells are bonded to the front teeth as veneer crowns and can cover the resulting black triangles with an appropriate size.
