Aesthetic gum corrections

for a harmonious appearance of teeth and gums

Whether medically necessary or desired for aesthetic reasons, gum correction brings great relief and a new sense of beauty to those affected.

In particular, receding gums, irregular gums or exposed tooth necks are often perceived as aesthetically unpleasant. A strongly pronounced frenulum of the lips or an excessively tight frenulum of the tongue also lead to impairments.

At UNIQSMILE® we offer various treatments in the field of gum correction as well as oral surgery to correct the frenulum of the lips and tongue. Depending on the findings, various surgical techniques are used, which we perform under both local and general anesthesia – i.e. completely pain-free. You will also enjoy a hotel-like atmosphere, excellent service and very personal care for maximum well-being.

Possible reasons for a gum correction.

When we think of a bright, beautiful smile, we first think of straight, white teeth. But the gums are also part of the overall smile. If the interplay between teeth and gums is not harmonious, even the most beautiful teeth cannot look their best.
Gum corrections are therefore often carried out for aesthetic reasons. However, gum treatment can also be a medical necessity in the case of periodontal disease, i.e. inflammation of the periodontium. This is because inflammation of the gums leads to gum recession and, in the worst case, to tooth loss. Following successful gum treatment, gum correction can then be performed.

Gum corrections are a gum surgery procedure – also known as mucogingival surgery – and are used for the following gum malpositions:
– too little gum
– too much gum
– irregular gum

Mucogingival surgery includes surgical interventions in the area of the gums, including the removal of troublesome mucosal frenulum:
incorrectly fused lip or tongue frenulum

Gum recession: when the gums recede

Recession, atrophy or gum recession refers to the receding of the gums. This may be due to an incorrect tooth brushing technique or incorrect loading. It is also often the result of periodontitis. In any case, receding gums are generally not attractive to look at. In addition, gum recession can expose the sensitive tooth necks. This should be avoided at all costs, as exposed tooth necks can cause pain and lead to further problems.

Uneven gums: when teeth and gums do not look harmonious

Unevenly distributed gums often detract from the overall appearance of a beautiful smile because the teeth appear to be of different lengths. In these cases, gum straightening is possible for a visually harmonious appearance.

Gum smile: when too much gum is visible

In the so-called “gummy smile”, there is visually too much gum and the teeth appear very small when smiling. The gummy smile does not lead to any functional impairment, but many people find it unattractive. We present the treatment methods at UNIQSMILE® under: Treatment of the gummy smile.

A strongly pronounced frenulum of the lips

The labial frenulum connects our lips to our gums in the mouth. These can sometimes be too tight by nature. A lip frenulum that is too tight is often diagnosed as part of orthodontic treatment. The upper labial frenulum in particular is very short and tight in some people. This can result in receding gums or an unattractive gap between the upper incisors.

Malposition of the frenulum of the tongue

The lingual frenulum connects the tongue and the floor of the mouth. If it is too short, this restricts the mobility of the tongue. Speech therapists often diagnose a frenulum of tongue that is too strong because this can lead to pronunciation problems such as lisping. The consequences of a severely shortened frenulum of the tongue can be changes to the dental arch and misalignment of the incisors.

The different methods of gum treatment

Recession coverage: If there is too little gum, i.e. gum recession, various treatment methods or surgical techniques can be considered. We can cover exposed tooth necks with gum tissue using a gum graft or a flap technique or a combination of both.

Gum augmentation without surgery: Alternatively, gums can also be rebuilt with hyaluronic acid which is injected between the mucous membrane and the jawbone. The result is immediately visible. However, hyaluronic acid degrades over time, so the treatment needs to be repeated. must.

Papilla reconstruction: Another dental esthetic treatment is the papilla reconstruction.

Excess gums – for example in the context of gingival hyperplasia (gum overgrowth) – can be removed using laser treatment or mucogingival surgery. At UNIQSMILE®, we combine different procedures for uneven gums. Gum treatments are generally without complications. Swelling subsides after a few days.

The most frequently asked questions about gum corrections

Can gums be rebuilt?

The gums can be rebuilt using a procedure known as “flap grafting”. In this method, healthy gums from the neighboring region are moved to the root surface to be covered in order to replace the missing gums.

How much gum is normal?

The relationship between teeth, gums and upper lip should be in balance. However, if an above-average amount of gums is visible when smiling, this is referred to as a “gummy smile”. If you feel impaired by the gummy smile, this can be corrected with an aesthetic correction.

What to do with exposed tooth necks?

Exposed tooth necks can cause pain with hot or cold food, sweet drinks or acidic fruit. The necks of the teeth can be treated with a pure plastic neck filling. The advantage of this is the speed of treatment and the protection of the soft tissue. However, the disadvantage of this treatment is that the retracted gums remain in their position and therefore the esthetic situation is only insufficiently improved. Alternatively, the necks of the teeth can also be treated microsurgically by means of a “sliding flap plasty”. This involves thickening the gum on the exposed tooth neck and returning it to its original position. This procedure is somewhat more complex, but results in gentler coverage and, above all, an aesthetically pleasing situation.

Can receding gums come back?

No! Gums that have receded, e.g. due to periodontitis (a disease of the gums and the periodontium), cannot return under natural circumstances. Gum recession can only be stopped and rebuilt by means of gum correction through microsurgery.
