It’s that time of year again: on 14 February, the world celebrates Valentine’s Day. There are many myths surrounding this „day of lovers“ – but what is it really all about? Is it just a marketing ploy by florists and chocolate manufacturers? Find out in this article, along with some great last-minute gift ideas.
Many stories are told about the origins of Valentine’s Day. From its origin due to the mating season of birds, to the day commemorating the goddess of childbirth, to minstrels from the south of France. We would like to spare you the research and therefore only provide you with the currently most reliable theory as to why we celebrate love every year on 14 February:
Valentine’s Day was originally a day of remembrance for Bishop Valentine of Terni, around whom many legends entwine. He is said to have given flowers from his garden to lovers and married soldiers despite the ban. The tradition of celebrating love on this day only developed later in the 14th century. Here in Germany, Valentine’s Day only really became popular after the Second World War – presumably thanks to American soldiers who brought the custom back from their homeland and sent out so-called „Valentines“ – Valentine’s Day greeting cards.
Fortunately, each of you can decide for yourself whether you want to take part in the tradition of this day or whether you don’t attach any importance to Valentine’s Day for love.

- A trip together: For many couples, time together is a valuable commodity. Maybe it’s time for you to experience something nice together again?

- Flowers: Around a third of men give flowers as a Valentine’s Day gift; red roses are a particular favourite. Perhaps this is a nice idea for you too?
- Couple photos: In everyday life, you often don’t get to take photos of yourselves together – and thus create memories. A joint photo shoot could therefore be a great gift idea for you.
- Love letter: A few written lines from your loved one – some would certainly be happy about that. It doesn’t take much effort and a letter is a great way to express your love.
- Photo book: If you still have a little time, you could create a photo album: either online with one of the many providers or, if time is of the essence, print out photos and stick them in an album yourself.
- Small gestures of love: a lovingly run bath with lots of bubbles, candles, a glass of sparkling wine and a good book. This ensures pure relaxation.
- Homemade chocolates: Anyone with a sweet tooth is sure to be delighted with chocolates they have created themselves.
- A classic last-minute gift: a beautiful fragrance as a sign of love. Perfumes make an excellent last-minute Valentine’s Day gift. Just make sure you have the right nose, because tastes differ!
