We would like to spare you the research and therefore only provide you with the currently most reliable theory as to why we celebrate love every year on February 14: Valentine’s Day was originally a day of remembrance for Bishop Valentine of Terni, around whom many legends entwine. He is said to have given flowers from his garden to lovers and married soldiers despite the ban. The tradition of celebrating love on this day only developed later in the 14th century. Here in Germany, Valentine’s Day only really became popular after the Second World War – presumably thanks to American soldiers who brought the custom back from their homeland and sent out so-called “Valentines” – Valentine’s Day greeting cards. Fortunately, each of you can decide for yourself whether you want to take part in the tradition of this day or whether you don’t attach any importance to Valentine’s Day for love.
